The Croton Watershed Clean Water Coalition was established in 1997 by community, housing and environmental groups in New York City and Westchester and Putnam Counties to fight for water pollution prevention at the source. While the focus has been on preventing the planned filtration of water from the Croton system, the Coalition's mission is broader and includes the preservation of all three watersheds (Croton, Catskill and Delaware). Established in 1976, the Greenmarket supports 36 weekly markets in 28 locations throughout the city, half of which are situated in low-income neighborhoods, helping to sustain well over 175 farmers and 10,000 acres of working farmland. This grant provided support for the New Farmer Development Project to build a sustainable regional agriculture and community food security system in the city by helping New York City immigrants with farming backgrounds re-enter farming, and by direct marketing their crops through Greenmarket farmers' markets. Make the Road by Walking was founded in 1997 in the wake of changes in federal, state and city welfare regulations, and changes in federal immigration laws which targeted America's poor and immigrant communities. Over the past three years Make the Road by Walking has expanded its organizing efforts beyond economic justice issues to include workplace justice, a safer and healthier environment, and expanded opportunities and support for Bushwick's youth.
