ELIGIBILITY
The Foundation:
  • makes grants to tax-exempt organizations with 501(c)(3) classifications from the Internal Revenue Service for work within the United States to individuals
  • will not consider requests for endowments, capital construction, general fundraising, deficit financing or scholarships, fellowships, loans or grants to individuals
  • does not make grants for research or give support to conferences, seminars, media events, or workshops unless they are an integral part of a broader program
  • does not generally make grants for college and university based programs
  • does not provide support for the production and development of television and media programming

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The Foundation accepts letters of inquiry through an Internet Application Form or by mail.

The first step is to complete the funding quiz. If after completing the quiz your request is eligible for funding consideration, you will be directed to an Internet Application Form.

Note: If you wish to complete an online form you have already started, please click here.

If you prefer to mail a letter of inquiry, it should be no more than three pages and include the following:

  • Description of your organization, including your constituencies;
  • Your organization's strategy for addressing the problems, needs or issues that you work on;
  • Description of the activities for which you are requesting funding;
  • What you hope to accomplish during the grant period; and
  • Other major sources of funding for your organization.

Funding inquiries can be submitted at any time during the year. They are reviewed on a continuous basis by the program staff. We welcome the opportunity to meet with prospective grantees, but prefer to wait until we receive an inquiry to determine if the meeting will be useful.

Proposals should be submitted to the Foundation only upon request. A proposal can be submitted via the Internet Application Form or by mail. If submitting by mail, the Foundation can provide you with a proposal format upon request. The Foundation also accepts the common grant applications used by the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers and the National Network of Grantmakers (now defunct). Since the Foundation receives more requests than it can fund, you should not interpret a request for a proposal as an indication of likely support.

We may request additional information from applicants and consult with persons knowledgeable about the organization and/or the proposed activities. As part of the review process, we will meet with the applicant preferably at its location or in New York City. Final decisions on grants are made by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, which meets three times a year (spring, summer and fall).

Letters of Inquiry not submitted through the Internet Application Form should be sent as follows:
